At Origins 2011, Kenneth Hite (Day After Ragnarok, Trail of Cthulhu, and much more) held a seminar on setting design which the Yog-Sothoth guys recorded: Kenneth Hite on Fundamentals of Setting Design.

Hite three fundamentals are:

1. Start with your goals for the setting (as opposed to plate tectonics and weather patterns).

Having written a prologue to my own game in iambic pentameter, I am certainly glad I didn't write my whole game in it. It would have made the word limit even more of an issue, for a start.
